Going to inpatient treatment for 30 days or longer can seem like a lifetime. You don’t need to bring your entire life with you to treatment. Here is a list of recommended essentials to make your stay in inpatient treatment as comfortable as possible.
Clothing
Every day you will have a mix of activities from indoor therapy and group therapy to outdoor activities or exercise. At night time, you might be taken to offsite meetings of twelve step and other recovery groups. Clothing choices should be what makes you feel the most comfortable and safe. You don’t want to bring complicated outfits that might be uncomfortable during the day- unless that is what makes you the most comfortable. Generally you will want to bring clothing for the following occasions:
-
Pajamas and lounging clothes for nighttime activities spent inside the treatment facility
-
Clothing you don’t mind staining/getting dirty to wear during outdoor adventures and art therapy
-
Swimsuit for swimming therapy, outings, or an onsite jacuzzi, if there is one.
-
Shoes for the gym, the day time, going off-site, and shower shoes
Toiletries
You will most likely need to bring your own shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other primary toiletries. Some treatment centers might provide basic toiletries, while others encourage you to bring the products which make you the most comfortable. Since you are going to residential inpatient treatment, there are some precautions which will be taken. For example, you may not be able to bring a traditional razor, to prevent self-harm. Mouthwash with alcohol will not likely be permitted as someone might abuse the substance.
Comforts Of Home
Your bedding and home environment will be provided for you. To make your living quarters feel more like home, you can bring some elements with you like pictures, familiar books, postcards, a favorite blanket, or other tokens of nostalgia.
Journals/Art Supplies
Art therapy and journaling will be regular parts of your treatment experience. You might want to have your own access to private materials that help you self-regulate and process your thoughts during the day.
Medications
Your medications will be provided for you after you meet with your physician and psychiatrist. The nursing staff will administer your medications at the prescribed times, or as needed according to prescription.
