Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a small group of people participate in counseling with one or more therapists. Group therapy can involve the use of various counseling theories, which may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, or Gestalt Therapy. Expressive art therapies, skills training, or recreation-based therapies may also be offered in a group format. According to a 2009 study (Gardenswartz, 2009), group therapy has shown to be as or more effective in the treatment of co-occurring disorders than individual therapy.
At Cottonwood Tucson, we believe in the clinical efficacy of group therapy. Group therapy provides a nurturing, safe, and supportive environment in which individuals can begin to examine self-destructive behaviors, relationship patterns and negative beliefs that preclude them from fully participating in a recovery lifestyle. Individuals are assigned a primary group, facilitated by a Master level clinician, and consisting of other members in various stages of treatment at Cottonwood. Primary group therapy provides significant opportunity for connection with other group members in order to increase interpersonal insight, develop coping mechanisms, and address unresolved issues of trauma, depression, and addiction.
At Cottonwood, we also provide targeted group therapy to address issues such as trauma, grief and loss, anger management, relapse prevention, and depression. These topic-specific groups allow participants to explore issues of focus with other members who are struggling with similar life problems. These groups provide psycho-education, enhance cohesion among group members and install hope by providing evidenced-based interventions to support healing and recovery.
